Sherm Porter is a Father, Friend, Leader, Coach, Author, Sailor, and hard worker.
As a third-generation Navy veteran, his father and grandfather instilled a passion in him to never fear hard work. Their motto was, "Do it, do it right, and do it right the first time."
He won't say he has mastered "do it right the first time!" but he is the hardest worker in every room.
From a very young age, Sherm wanted to run his own business. He started in his parents' garage repairing bikes at the age of 10. He has successfully run several companies since honorably discharging from the US Navy. First, a commercial cleaning company he started in 1998, then a real estate investment company in 1999. He opened his catering company in 2008, and most recently, a small business coaching & consulting company launched in 2020.
Sherm has a passion for giving back and owes that to his grandfather. He said to young Sherm, "You must help the community that provides you with jobs and customers." Since 2010, Sherm has volunteered at the Sunday Breakfast Mission the day before and morning of every Thanksgiving. He helps the kitchen volunteers prepare food for the 800+ people that celebrate their Thanksgiving at the Mission. Sherm has also helped raise funds for a long list of charities and fundraisers through his catering company, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware Beef & Beer Benefit, donations for the community, and various galas and balls.
As a small business leader in Delaware, Sherm is an active member of the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce. He also helps sponsor the "Free Lunch Friday" at the University of Delaware Horn Program. He has had the honor of speaking to the UD Entrepreneurship students on several occasions. Sherm and Mike Womer talk about small business owners' issues each week on their podcast "Destination Success."
